Starlink Broadband: Your Questions Answered

For the last number of years, Smart Sat Connect has been Ireland's number-one installer of Starlink Satellite dishes. Despite this type of internet being available since around 2019, we still find ourselves answering quite a few questions on how it works. This is understandable; after all, Starlink broadband is at the very cutting edge of internet technology. To make this information that much more accessible to our clients, we have compiled some of the most common questions below.

What is Starlink Broadband

Starlink Broadband is a cutting-edge internet service provided by SpaceX's Starlink satellite constellation. It offers high-speed, low-latency internet access to users across the globe, including those in remote or underserved areas where traditional internet infrastructure is limited or unavailable.

Unlike traditional broadband services that rely on terrestrial infrastructure, Starlink Broadband utilises a network of thousands of small satellites orbiting Earth in low Earth orbit (LEO). These satellites work together to create a vast coverage network, providing global connectivity.

To access Starlink Broadband, users need a small satellite dish, known as a "dish terminal," installed at their location. The dish terminal communicates with the Starlink satellites, establishing a direct link to the internet. This enables fast and reliable internet connectivity, even in areas with challenging geographical or infrastructure constraints.

Smart Sat Connect installs this small satellite for you and connects your property. From there, you use the internet as you usually would, except you can enjoy Starlink's exceptionally fast speed.

 How much does Starlink cost?

We charge an installation fee, including installing the satellite and setting up the modem for you. If you're interested in a free installation quote, please contact us today.

Please remember that there is an equipment fee and a monthly charge from Starlink for using their broadband service.

How many Starlink Satellites are in orbit?

In 2019, SpaceX embarked on the launch of its Starlink satellite constellation. As of May 2023, the Starlink network comprises an impressive array of over 4,000 small satellites that have been mass-produced and deployed in low Earth orbit (LEO). These satellites establish seamless communication with dedicated ground transceivers strategically positioned globally. Looking ahead, SpaceX envisions a grand expansion of the Starlink constellation, with plans to deploy nearly 12,000 satellites. Furthermore, there is a potential for future growth beyond that, with a projected scope of up to 42,000 satellites. This ambitious undertaking demonstrates SpaceX's commitment to developing a vast and robust satellite network to revolutionise global connectivity.

How much is Starlink per month?

Based on the official Starlink broadband website, Starlink costs €65 per month. However, this may change in the coming months and years. We'll always advise our clients on monthly fees during installation.
